Billy Connolly rewrote what a comedian could be: a Glasgow shipyard welder who turned the folk club stage into a place for long, unruly, gloriously human storytelling. Six decades on, his influence sits under nearly every stand-up special made since.
On screen he proved just as durable, moving between broad comedy and quiet, wounded character work — Mrs Brown, The Last Samurai, Brave, What We Did on Our Holiday — always with the same directness that made the live shows land.
The Key West Film Festival presented Connolly the Golden Key for Lifetime Achievement alongside a 20th anniversary screening and conversation around The Aristocrats, the documentary that let a hundred comedians tell one filthy joke and accidentally made a film about craft.
