Synopsis
The merry prankster spirits of Jimmy Buffett and Jim Harrison made themselves known after our screening of ALL THAT IS SACRED yesterday, knocking out the power throughout Key West just as Tom McGuane took the stage for a Q&A! As a result, we will be screening the original 1973 film TARPON for FREE on Sunday night at the Perry Hotel Key West. All are welcome to join us at 7pm for the this outdoor screening, followed by the previously scheduled REINVENTING ELVIS.
Join legendary novelist and raconteur Tom McGuane for a unique double feature that takes audiences back to the halcyon days when Key West was a hotbed of creative and often illicit activity for a rowdy assortment of poets, writers. musicians and other artists who first gathered in the late 1960s to fire up a community of rogues. McGuane, the author of National Book Award nominee 92 in the Shade and nine other books, will be honored with the Golden Key Award for Artistic Excellence.
United in their love of literature and fishing (and cocaine and LSD), the likes of McGuane, Jim Harrison, Richard Brautigan and Jimmy Buffett made early ’70s Key West a kind of mecca. Filmmakers Guy De La Valdene and Christian Odasso document the scene in their obscure film called TARPON, from 1974. It shares the screen with ALL THAT IS SACRED, a contemporary companion piece that borrows footage from the earlier film, and further honors the “hippie Algonquin Round Table,” a crew survived only my McGuane.
ALL THAT IS SACRED director Scott Ballew and producer Taylor Johns are scheduled to join Tom McGuane himself for a post-show conversation, moderated by Billy Corben.
After the screening, ticketholders and passholders are invited to a performance by Cayman Smith-Martin at Andy’s Cabana from 8:00-9:30pm (all ages!), followed by a party at Key West First Legal Rum Distillery to celebrate 90 years since the end of Prohibition at 9:30pm (21+).
