Here’s the story of the man behind the 1977 gay disco anthem “I Was Born This Way,” gospel singer Carl Bean whose Motown hit made him a star. Then the AIDS crisis led him into activism, and founding the Unity Fellowship Church – the first congregation that LGBTQ+ people of color could call their own. Now Archbishop Dean, the artist is celebrated by the likes of Lady Gaga (who re-popularized the song) and Questlove, enlivened by the use of rotoscope animation.
