Not your everyday rock’n’roll biopic, Better Man takes a wild chance with its concept. In this dramatized version of UK pop superstar Robbie Williams‘s rollercoaster career, directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) the singer is depicted as… a monkey.
Actor Jonno Davies, altered through the magic of CGI, inhabits the role, as the performer first emerges as the youngest member of the massive ’90s boy band Take That, and then goes on to enjoy a stratospheric solo run, breaking concert and record-sales records while navigating the perils and pitfalls of world-beating fame. “Against all odds, [the] gimmick works,” wrote Variety, “distinguishing the project from so many other cookie-cutter pop-star hagiographies.”
