Synopsis
Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, this is the first English-language feature by Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar in a 45-year-career. His 23rd film stars two of the greatest living actresses, Academy Award-winning performers Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, in a “a hushed and humane portrayal of the beauty of life and the inevitability of death, graced with incandescent performances by Moore and Swinton that tap the very essence of being” (New York Film Festival). Set in New York City and upstate New York, the chamber piece charts the friendship that is rekindled between two former journalist colleagues. Swinton’s Martha is a onetime war correspondent, now dying of cancer, who asks Moore’s Ingrid, now a celebrated author, to offer support and companionship as she opts for euthanasia—a surprising request from someone not seen in years. As the pair retreat to a house upstate, the story takes shape in their dialogue, heady conversation anticipating the moment when Martha decides to die.
