THE LOVE THAT REMAINS

To follow his acclaimed 2022 drama “Godland,” Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason turns his attention from matters of faith to the coming apart of a marriage. It’s a very personal approach. The troubled couple, Magnús (Sverrir Gudnason), a fisherman, and Anna (Saga Garðarsdóttir), an artist, have three children – played by the director’s own offspring. And Pálmason handles his own 35mm camerawork, as ever making a uniquely evocative use of the austere Icelandic landscape, as distinctive visually as are his varieties of dramatic tone, which can be subtly funny or outright surreal.
