Country music has been shook up in recent years by rapper Lil Nas X, who sold 18 million copies of his hit Old Town Road and pop superstar Beyoncé, who devoted an entire concept album, Cowboy Carter, to exploring the genre. This documentary looks deep into the form’s history of rebellion while introducing audiences to a new wave of authentic stars – such as the rapper-turned-country singer Jelly Roll; Grammy award winning singer Lainey Wilson; Black musicians Breland and Blanco Brown; and Sam Williams (grandson of Hank) who came out as gay—who are flipping Nashville’s script.
