Synopsis
The festival’s closing night selection spotlights Anne Hathaway, who gives a head-spinning performance as the dangerous catalyst in the quiet, desperate life of a young woman living in small-town Massachusetts in 1964. That’s Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie), the title character in this adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh‘s debut novel, whose crippling shyness and oppressive home life come undone when Hathaway’s glamorous Rebecca shows up as the new shrink at the juvenile facility where Eileen does clerical work. The stirrings of a sapphic love story take a dark and sudden twist in this atmospheric period piece.
The Hollywood Reporter critic David Rooney presents the screening.
“Rippling with sly humor and a bold command of the tropes of classic Hitchcockian suspense, this is a twisty and beguiling original, led by contrasting but expertly synced performances from Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway,” Rooney wrote in his original review for The Hollywood Reporter. “The intense final act sees both principal characters behave in ways that appear to have been coiled inside them all along, giving the actors deliciously juicy stuff to work with.”
