Paula Deen was the queen of Southern cooking. A superstar on The Food Network, the Savannah, Ga., restaurateur parlayed her chicken-fried charisma and shamelessly indulgent recipes into a celebrity empire. And then, it all came crashing down. A 2013 scandal involving a former employee and Deen’s use of a racial slur turned the congenial matron into a national pariah. Prolific Miami documentarian Billy Corben explores what happened – in conversation with Deen and others – and offers a more nuanced interpretation of events, and what’s really going on when cultural personalities get canceled.
