Synopsis
Masculinity and marketing are the subjects of this documentary, which celebrates the flamboyant vibes of the 1970s “magalog,” International Male, which once was called “Victoria’s Secret for men.” This playful excursion into unabashedly homoerotic peacocking suggests the ways that the fashion-world disrupter Gene Burkard helped jazz up the options for men’s clothing, making it OK to go a little wild. “While the documentary is tongue in cheek, its analysis of postwar American masculinity, the devastating effects of the AIDS crisis, and fashion’s power to bridge the cultural barriers between gay and straight men is wholly sincere.” (Tribeca Festival).
