An ode to simple pleasures and one man’s solitary state of grace, “Perfect Days” is German filmmaker Wim Wenders’ celebrated new feature. Made in Tokyo with an all-Japanese cast, it stars Kōji Yakusho as Hirayama, a gentle man in his middle age who cleans toilets for a living, but lives for what he loves: the rock’n’roll of Patti Smith and Van Morrison, the literature of William Faulkner, the ephemeral play of light through tree leaves. Yakusho, winner of the best actor award at Cannes this year, gives a magnetic performance in a film of everyday enchantments.
